Welcome to Ally

Becoming an Ally

An ALLY is simply any person who is informed about, is sensitive toward and understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people and their issues. An ALLY affirms the experience and rights of GLBTI persons and chooses to challenge the homophobic and heterosexist values of others in a variety of ways including by individual example and personal awareness. ALLIES are not identified as being heterosexual or GLBTI but are representative of the entire UWA community.

Most people grow up with unexamined heterosexist assumptions, attitudes and behaviours. The process of alliance to GLBTI people and their issues can take time. For this reason, awareness training and information sessions are an important part of being an ALLY.

There are a number of responsibilities associated with being an ALLY. If you have read these responsibilities and are interested in becoming an Ally please e-mail ally@admin.uwa.edu.au or contact ext 2252. If you have any questions related to becoming an Ally please contact the Equity and Diversity. If you would like more information about future programs or to enrol on our next program. Click here.
